What is Infrared?

Infrared rays don’t heat the air but heat what they hit through a process called conversion.

How Does the Infrared Sauna Benefit Us?

Infrared rays provide a deep and gentle heating effect in the muscle tissues and internal organs without undue burden to our heart. To cope with this heat the pores of our skin open and we perspire therefore discharging waste products like toxins, sodium, alcohol, nicotine, cholesterol and the potentially carcinogenic heavy metals like zinc, lead, nickel, cadmium, etc. This profuse perspiration deeply cleanses the skin and helps shed any old skin cells leaving it glowing with improved tone, elasticity, texture and colour. The deep penetrating heat also stimulates the heart to increase blood circulation to intensify metabolism and to help infections to heal more quickly.

Cardiovascular Conditioning

While the moisture on the surface of the skin evaporates and thus cools the body, a number of other changes occur in the body to release the heat as quickly as possible. The heart beats harder and faster, pumping more blood through the dilated blood vessels, thus achieving the conditioning benefits of continuous exercise.

Weight Control

Our body expends energy to produce sweat (1 gm sweat requires 0.586 kcal). A moderately conditioned person can easily sweat off up to 1000gms or more in a sauna session, the equivalent to running 10-15 kms. While this weight loss can be regained by re-hydration with water, the calories consumed will not. The sauna is therefore a tool for those who don’t exercise and those who can’t exercise yet want an effective weight control and fitness program, along with the benefits that regular exercise brings.

Removes Toxins and Mineral Waste

Increased blood circulation stimulates the sweat glands, releasing built-up toxins and waste. Daily sweating can help detoxify your body as it rids itself of an accumulation of potentially carcinogenic heavy metals (lead, mercury, zinc, nickel, cadmium) as well as alcohol, nicotine, sodium, sulphuric acid and cholesterol.

Burns calories and controls weight

As you relax in the gentle heat of the Infrared sauna, your body is actually hard at work, producing sweat, pumping blood and burning calories. In a single sauna session you may burn as many calories as you would rowing or jogging for 30 minutes, so you lose weight not just water.

Clears Cellulite

Infrared saunas help clear ugly cellulite and because the radiant heat of the Infrared sauna warms three times as deeply as traditional saunas it is significantly more effective at doing so.

Relieves Pain

The deep heat of the Infrared sauna helps peripheral blood vessels dilate, bringing relief and healing to muscle and soft tissue injuries. Increased blood circulation carries off metabolic waste products and delivers oxygen-rich blood to oxygen-depleted muscles so they recover faster. Muscles relax most readily when tissues are warm allowing for greater flexibility and range of motion.

Eases joint Pain and Stiffness

Radiant heat therapy is used to treat patients suffering from many forms of arthritis. In addition, it has been proven effective in the treatment of sprains, neuralgia, bursitis, muscle spasms, joint stiffness and many other muscular-skeletal ailments. Much of the stiffness aches and soreness that comes with aging is reduced or eliminated.

Improves the Immune System

The sauna’s deep heat raises your body temperature inducing an artificial fever. As it works to combat the “fever,” your body’s immune system is strengthened. Combined with the elimination of toxins and wastes produced by the intense sweating your overall health and resistance to disease is increased.

Increases Blood Circulation and Strengthens the Cardiovascular System

As your body increases sweat production to cool itself, your heart works harder pumping blood at a greater rate to boost circulation, supplying the conditioning benefits of continuous exercise. Heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate increase, while diastolic blood pressure drops, for improved overall cardiovascular fitness. Increased blood circulation has also been shown to relieve acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns, lesions and cuts. In addition, open wounds heal more quickly, reducing scarring.

Relaxation (Reduces Stress and Fatigue)

Perhaps the most immediate relief the Infrared sauna offers is simple relaxation, as it melts away the stresses and tensions of everyday life. Just a few minutes in the gentle warmth of the Infrared sauna gives you an overall massaging effect, soothing jangled nerves and knotted muscles. You’ll feel rejuvenated and renewed, restored in both body and mind.

Improves Skin

The profuse sweating achieved after just a few minutes in the Infrared sauna carries off deeply imbedded impurities and dead skin cells, leaving the skin glowing and immaculately clean. Increased circulation draws your skin’s own natural nutrients to the surface. You’ll see improved tone, elasticity, texture and fresh colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Far Infrared Safe?

Far infrared light is part of the spectrum of natural sunlight. When you go out in the sun you can feel the warm heat on you. This is due to the effect of far infrared. The harmful rays from the sun are at the opposite end of the spectrum, ultraviolet light (UV light).

Unlike UV light, far infrared is completely safe to use. You could be exposed to it for hours and your skin would never burn. The only effects you would notice are the gentle heating of the body as the rays penetrate the tissues.

Infrared is used in the healthcare system due to it being safe and effective. Premature babies in hospital are kept warm by exposure to infrared lamps. Some physiotherapists also use infrared machines to help tissue healing and recovery from injury.

How is infrared measured?

The infrared is divided into 3 segments by wavelengths, measured in microns;

Near Infrared: 0.76~1.5 microns
Middle Infrared: 1.5~5.6 microns
Far Infrared: 5.6~1000 microns

Only far infrared, as used in our sauna, penetrates organic substances such as the human body to provide safe, effective and uniform heat to your body.

Infrared Saunas Vs. Traditional Saunas

Traditional saunas use hot stones and steam and operate at temperatures of around 76-88 degrees C. Infrared saunas emit radiant heat that warms the user directly penetrating up to 45mm into the body and results in the normal sweating that occurs in a traditional sauna but at a temperature usually between 30-50 degrees C.

In this gentle and deep penetrating heat you will sweat 2-3 times more than in a traditional sauna whilst in a much more comfortable and relaxing temperature. This means that in the infrared sauna toxins and stored fats will be removed much more effectively than in the traditional sauna.
